Melanie R. Freeman, Ph.D., H.C.L.D. Director of
Reproductive Specialty Laboratory of Middle Tennessee Dr. Freeman grew up
in Colorado, and obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in Biological
Science and a Master of Science degree in Radiation Biology at
Colorado State University. She worked in the field of cancer
research for eight years in laboratories at Colorado State, Stanford Research
Institute in California, and Columbia University's College of
Physicians and Surgeons in New York City.
In 1984, upon moving to Nashville, she pursued a career in
clinical laboratory medicine, serving as an embryologist at the
Center for Fertility and Reproductive Research at Vanderbilt
University. This position was ideal as she was working in a new and
exciting field doing something that she really believed in: helping
people become parents. Dr. Freeman's expertise in tissue culture and
sterile technique was useful in establishing in vitro fertilization
(IVF) laboratory techniques at Vanderbilt. She worked there for
seven years, actively developing research protocols related to IVF.
In 1991, she became the Laboratory Director at Nashville
Fertility Center. Under her guidance, NFC became one of the first
IVF laboratories in the country, and the first in Tennessee, to
achieve accreditation by The College of American Pathologists
Reproductive Laboratory Accreditation Program. After working in the
field of IVF for 16 years, she completed her doctorate in Human
Physiology at Meharry Medical College in Nashville, and continues to conduct
research related to IVF. Currently, Dr. Freeman is the
Clinical Laboratory Director of Reproductive Specialty Laboratory of
Middle Tennessee (formerly the laboratories of Nashville Fertility
Center).Dr. Freeman has presented her research at the annual meetings
of the American Society for Reproductive Medicine, and has published
her research in scientific journals, such as Fertility and Sterility
and Human Reproduction. She is a licensed Medical Laboratory
Director and is accredited by the American Board of Bioanalysis
(ABB) as High Complexity Laboratory Director (HCLD). She also serves
as an inspector for the College of American Pathologists
Reproductive Laboratory Accreditation Program, which accredits IVF
and Andrology laboratories, and is an ad hoc reviewer for the
scientific journals, Fertility and Sterility and Human Reproduction.
