Understanding the Causes of Infertility
Infertility is the inability to conceive after 12 months of unprotected intercourse and affects 10-15% of all couples. If the female is 35 years or older, infertility is assumed after only 6 months of trying because of the need for expedited evaluation due to age (see Biological Clock).
Testing to uncover the reason for infertility is based on the couple’s individual history and will probably include:
- Semen analysis
- Ovarian Reserve Tests
- Testing for ovulation
- Uterine and Fallopian Tube evaluation
- More advanced tests include antisperm antibodies and sperm penetration.
After initial testing, 40% of infertility will usually be attributed to male factors, and 40% to female factors. In about 20% of patients infertility is due to a combination of both factors.
Because infertility affects couples, it is very important that both partners participate in the evaluation. Here at NFC we offer thorough and tailored testing that will help us develop the best and most effective treatment plan for you.
