Endometrial Biopsy

An endometrial biopsy can offer answers about fertility challenges

Because the condition of the uterus is crucial to the development of a healthy pregnancy, our Tennessee fertility doctors often utilize an endometrial biopsy when a woman is having certain fertility challenges. This type of biopsy provides insight into the woman’s uterine lining and helps us determine if she needs certain treatments.

The doctor may recommend a biopsy if a woman experiences repeated embryo implantation failure or multiple failed IVF cycles. As such, this procedure can be an important step on the path to parenthood.

What can you expect from an endometrial biopsy?

To determine if there are any issues with the endometrium, one of our Tennessee fertility doctors performs the biopsy by removing a small piece of tissue from the uterine lining. To do this, they first use a speculum to view the cervix and clean the area. They then insert a catheter through the cervix and into the uterus. Finally, they use mild suction to remove a sample of the uterine tissue.

After the short procedure, the woman might experience mild uterine cramping. She may also have light vaginal bleeding. However, she’s typically able to resume normal activities soon after the procedure.

Next steps

After the endometrial biopsy, we send the tissue sample to a lab. There, the specialists can determine whether the woman’s uterus has issues, including endometrial polyps or fibroids, an infection or inflammation that could interfere with embryo implantation.

If the endometrial biopsy leads to the discovery of abnormalities, one of our Tennessee fertility doctors works with the woman to develop a treatment plan that provides the best possible chance of developing a healthy pregnancy.

In the case of polyps or fibroids, the doctor may recommend minimally invasive surgery. Inflammation often requires antibiotics or other medications. Our team may also recommend taking certain hormones to prepare the uterine lining for the next embryo transfer.

Regardless of the results, our expert team supports women in bypassing fertility challenges and fulfilling their dream of taking home a baby.
