Post-Embryo Transfer Care

Helpful ideas for post-embryo transfer care

Helpful ideas for post-embryo transfer careThere are many ways patients at our Tennessee fertility center can improve their post-embryo transfer care. These steps can help ensure that the transfer is as successful as possible and that the woman feels her best both emotionally and physically.

What to expect from an embryo transfer

An embryo transfer is a straightforward procedure that usually takes less than 20 minutes. The first step consists of the doctor placing a speculum in the woman’s vagina and removing cervical mucous that could impede the embryo’s ability to reach the top portion of the uterus.

Next, an embryologist places the embryo in a catheter, or small tube, and brings it to the procedure room. The doctor then inserts the embryo into the woman’s uterus using ultrasound for direction. We typically have women rest at our Tennessee fertility center for an hour after the procedure.

Post-embryo transfer care tips

There are many ways a woman can ensure she receives high-quality post-embryo transfer care. This care can support her in staying calm and healthy after the transfer.

Rest. While the embryo transfer is a minimally invasive procedure, it’s helpful for the woman to rest after the transfer.

Stay on top of taking medications. If the doctor prescribes a medication like progesterone or estrogen, it’s important that the woman take this medication as instructed. These medications can support a healthy pregnancy in developing.

Take folic acid. Many doctors recommend women begin taking folic acid after the transfer, if they haven’t already been taking it.

Eat healthy food. Women can enhance their overall health after the embryo transfer by eating a well-rounded diet rich in plant proteins, healthy carbs, iron and full-fat dairy.

Don’t take a pregnancy test. While it can be tempting to take a pregnancy test soon after the embryo transfer, taking a test too early can result in a false negative. This negative result can cause the woman unnecessary stress. Ideally, the woman waits to take a blood pregnancy test at our Tennessee fertility center 11 to 14 days after the transfer.

These post-embryo transfer care strategies can help women have a positive experience after this exciting procedure. Contact us for more information about our fertility services.
