The importance of PCOS awareness

The importance of PCOS awarenessOur Tennessee fertility clinic understands the importance of raising PCOS awareness, as we often treat women with this condition. PCOS, or polycystic ovary syndrome, is a disorder that is due to an imbalance of reproductive hormones. It impacts millions of women, and it can cause many symptoms and interfere with fertility. But with the right support, women can move beyond the struggles of PCOS.

Facts to raise PCOS awareness

Knowing about PCOS is an important part of reproductive health for many women, as knowing the symptoms of this disorder can lead to effective care. There is a range of symptoms a woman with polycystic ovary syndrome might experience.

  • Irregular periods
  • Ovarian cysts
  • Difficulty conceiving
  • High levels of androgens
  • Acne
  • Weight gain
  • Facial hair

PCOS can also result in diabetes, heart disease, obesity, anxiety and uterine cancer.

If a woman experiences these symptoms, we recommend she seek medical support. Diagnosis often involves an analysis of her medical history, a pelvic exam, blood tests and an ultrasound. The doctors at our Tennessee fertility clinic have vast experience providing PCOS diagnosis and treatment.

Treatment for PCOS

An important part of PCOS awareness is understanding how to manage it. One of the best recommendations for women with this disorder is to reach a healthy BMI using exercise and a healthy diet. Sometimes, just a 5% reduction in body weight can make a difference. The doctor might also prescribe birth control pills to help with the symptoms if the woman isn’t actively trying to conceive.

For those who are TTC, the doctor may provide ovulation induction medication if weight loss doesn’t improve fertility. In some cases, the woman may also need a treatment option like in vitro fertilization (IVF).

If you believe you have polycystic ovary syndrome, we’re here for you. The knowledgeable and compassionate team at our Tennessee fertility clinic can help you overcome the symptoms and infertility caused by PCOS.
