Discover fast facts about male infertility that can affect your fertility journey

While the subject of male fertility can seem overwhelming to many, it doesn’t have to be. There are a handful of facts about male infertility that can give men a crash course in navigating the path to fatherhood.

Sperm issues are the prime cause of male infertility. The most common causes of male fertility issues include sperm issues. Some examples include abnormally shaped sperm with poor movement, low sperm quality, sperm that cannot attach to the head of the egg, sperm that cannot penetrate the egg and low sperm count.

Some men don’t release sperm. When a man’s semen does not contain sperm, he has the condition azoospermia.

Age impacts fertility. Men 40 years and older are more likely to have fertility challenges.

Male factor infertility is more common than many realize. Of all infertility cases, approximately 40–50% are due to male factor infertility.

Smoking impacts fertility. Smoking cigarettes can significantly diminish a man’s fertility.

Weight is important. Having a significantly high or low body mass index (BMI) can influence male fertility.

Our Tennessee fertility clinic finds that understanding these facts helps men make healthier lifestyle choices and seek professional fertility support when needed.

Fast facts about male fertility evaluations

A benefit of knowing  facts about male infertility is that they can help men determine if they should visit our Tennessee fertility clinic. The male fertility evaluations that our clinic provides take little time and help doctors provide men with the right infertility diagnosis.

Semen analysis. One of the first steps in assessing a man’s fertility is a semen evaluation. If the test reveals certain issues, we may refer the man to a urologist for further testing.

Genetic testing. A low sperm count or the absence of sperm in semen that is not due to a blockage may indicate chromosomal issues. In this situation, genetic testing can provide helpful information.

Hormone evaluation. A blood test allows a fertility specialist to assess a man’s reproductive hormones. These hormones can affect a man’s sperm production and sexual function.

After reviewing results from the male fertility evaluations the doctor works with the man to develop an effective treatment plan. These treatments often result in men becoming fathers. Contact us to learn more about male fertility evaluations.
