Thyroid Health and Fertility

What you need to know about thyroid health and fertility

What you need to know about thyroid health and fertilityThyroid health and fertility have a strong connection, which is why the doctors at our Tennessee fertility center help patients learn more about this important topic. A key component of the fertility evaluations we perform is testing a patient’s thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) level. This information helps us determine whether they have thyroid problems that could affect their ability to have a healthy baby.

All the details on thyroid health and fertility

The blood test a patient receives to check their TSH level, in addition to an examination of their neck and glands, allows us to discover whether they’re experiencing certain thyroid conditions. These conditions could play a crucial role in their fertility and health.

Hypothyroidism. An important aspect of thyroid health and fertility is determining whether a patient has hypothyroidism. Low levels of thyroid hormones, due to an underactive thyroid gland, cause this issue. Hypothyroidism can lead to weight gain, fatigue, constipation, heavier periods and other uncomfortable symptoms. In addition, hypothyroidism can cause irregular or absent periods, which could interfere with the release of an egg. In men, hypothyroidism can lower sperm count and cause abnormal sperm motility (movement) and morphology (shape).

Hyperthyroidism. Hyperthyroidism occurs when the thyroid gland produces more hormones than it should. This can cause incredibly light, or irregular periods, which often disrupts ovulation. Hyperthyroidism in men can affect sperm morphology.

An additional fact about thyroid health and fertility is that an undiagnosed thyroid condition can increase the risk of miscarriage. This is why the specialists at our Tennessee fertility center work closely with patients to monitor their TSH level and determine the best treatment plan.

We have the expertise to treat thyroid conditions that interfere with fertility

If you’ve been having difficulty conceiving, have irregular periods or have had two or more miscarriages, we recommend having a doctor at our clinic evaluate your TSH level and general fertility.

When a specialist at our Tennessee fertility center determines that a woman has a thyroid issue, we can often treat it with medication that can help regulate hormone levels.

With proper treatment, many patients are able to overcome their thyroid and fertility issues to go on to have a healthy baby. Contact us for more information about our fertility services or to schedule an appointment.
