When to Consider IVF

Understanding when to consider IVF

Understanding when to consider IVFAs hopeful parents navigate the process of building their family at our Tennessee fertility clinic, they’re often curious about when to consider IVF. While in vitro fertilization is not the right treatment for all, it can be a wonderful option for those facing a range of fertility challenges.

When to consider IVF

When our Tennessee fertility clinic doctors work with hopeful parents to create an effective treatment plan, they may recommend IVF for certain fertility challenges. In the cases below, IVF may provide the best chance of developing a healthy pregnancy.

  • Multiple miscarriages or unsuccessful fertility treatments. Our doctors may recommend IVF for hopeful parents who have experienced multiple miscarriages or fertility treatments that did not result in a healthy pregnancy. IVF can help bypass many of the barriers that can cause these unfavorable results.
  • Diminished ovarian reserve. Part of understanding when to consider IVF is knowing that when the quality or quantity of a woman’s ovarian reserve is diminished, IVF can be one of the most effective paths to taking home a baby.
  • Ovulation challenges. Patients with disorders like polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), hypothalamic amenorrhea or ovarian failure may need IVF. The ovulation medications utilized during IVF cycles can help correct or circumvent these fertility challenges.
  • Damaged or blocked fallopian tubes. IVF can help women with pelvic inflammatory disease or who have had surgery in the abdomen or pelvis. These circumstances could create damage or a blockage in a woman’s fallopian tubes. This can prevent the sperm from reaching the egg or the fertilized egg from entering the uterus.
  • Endometriosis. Women with endometriosis wondering when to consider IVF should know that this condition could result in fertility problems, making IVF one of the best treatment options.
  • Male infertility. If a hopeful father has sperm abnormalities, utilizing IVF with intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI), which consists of an embryologist injecting the egg with a single healthy sperm, could be one of the fastest routes to build a family.
