Understanding when to see a fertility doctor can transform your journey to parenthood

Understanding when to see a fertility doctor can transform your journey to parenthoodEvery Nashville fertility doctor at our clinic wants you to know when to see a fertility doctor so that you can maximize your time and finances as you pursue your dream of taking home a healthy baby. Seeking support at the right time can also decrease your stress level and enhance your peace of mind.

Learn when to see a fertility doctor

The American Society for Reproductive Medicine, or ASRM, has clear criteria for when to see a fertility doctor.

  • Females 35 or older. If you’re 35 or older, have been trying to conceive for six months or more without contraception and are wondering when to see a fertility doctor, the answer is, as soon as possible, because egg quantity and quality diminish with age.
  • Trying to conceive for over a year. Healthy women under the age of 35, who have no known reproductive health issues and have been trying to conceive without contraception for one year or more should see a fertility doctor.
  • Certain medical conditions. Females with a medical condition that affects their ability to conceive, such as amenorrhea, sexual dysfunction or a history of pelvic disease, should see a fertility doctor.
  • High or low BMI. A woman’s BMI, or body mass index, can help her determine when to see a fertility doctor. If her BMI is too high or low her reproductive health might be affected as the balance of reproductive hormones that regulate ovulation can be altered if a woman is under or over a healthy weight.

A consult with a Nashville fertility doctor at our clinic can help you understand your options and create a plan that works for your unique needs and goals.

What happens when you’re evaluated?

Understanding when to see a fertility doctor is a crucial first step. The next step is coming in for a consultation. When you have your initial consult with a Nashville fertility doctor, ASRM recommends that sufficient time be allowed to cover specific areas.

  • Comprehensive health history. It is recommended that a comprehensive medical, reproductive and family history be obtained.
  • Physical evaluation. A physical evaluation will be done at the initial consult for both the female and the male partner.
  • Preconception care. The initial consultation is also a good time for you to be counseled on preconception care and screening for genetic conditions.

Our fertility experts look forward to offering you support as you explore the current state of your reproductive health.
