PCOS Awareness Month is the ideal time to learn more about polycystic ovary syndrome

PCOS Awareness Month is the ideal time to learn more about polycystic ovary syndromeIn honor of PCOS Awareness Month, our Tennessee fertility center wants to share information that helps women with this condition. Our goal is to help patients determine if they need to see a fertility specialist for PCOS treatment.

PCOS, or polycystic ovary syndrome, is a metabolic disorder that’s due to an imbalance of reproductive hormones. This condition affects millions of women and can cause a variety of symptoms, including infertility.

Our clinic offers a range of tests that can help a woman discover if she has PCOS. We also provide PCOS fertility treatments that can help her conceive when she’s ready for motherhood.

Learn more about the symptoms of this condition during PCOS Awareness Month

One of the most important aspects of PCOS Awareness Month is helping women understand the symptoms of PCOS. Women with polycystic ovary syndrome should seek the care of a fertility specialist if they experience these common PCOS symptoms.

  • Irregular periods
  • Ovarian cysts
  • Difficulty conceiving
  • High levels of androgens and insulin
  • Acne
  • Weight gain
  • Facial hair
  • High blood pressure
  • Elevated cholesterol

In some cases, there is also a connection between PCOS and diabetes, heart disease, obesity, anxiety, depression and uterine cancer.

When a woman seeks support from our Tennessee fertility center, one of our doctors will review her medical history. The doctor will then likely suggest a pelvic exam, blood tests and ultrasound.

PCOS fertility treatments our clinic provides

PCOS Awareness Month is also a time to teach women about PCOS treatment options. Weight loss is one of the most effective ways to minimize PCOS symptoms. Losing just 5% of their body weight can help women with PCOS. If a woman is not trying to become pregnant, birth control pills can also support her in treating PCOS.

Women wanting to start a family can benefit from the PCOS fertility treatments at our Tennessee fertility center.

Ovulation induction medications. One of the most common PCOS fertility treatments is taking ovulation induction medication like Clomid®, clomiphene citrate, or Femara®, letrozole.

IVF, or in vitro fertilization. In certain situations, women with PCOS will require IVF. IVF involves the woman taking ovulation induction medications while receiving regular monitoring at our clinic. When enough eggs mature, the doctor retrieves them during a simple procedure. Next, an embryologist fertilizes the eggs with sperm from the woman’s partner or chosen sperm donor. The doctor then transfers a resulting embryo into the woman’s uterus.

We encourage women who suspect they have PCOS to schedule a consultation at our clinic. With our support, women can move past the struggle of PCOS and fulfill their dream of parenthood. Contact us for more information about PCOS fertility treatments.
